Frequently Asked Questions about Weddings performed by Married Priests

Fall, 2009

by Louise Haggett

Following are answers to typical questions we receive regarding wedding ministry:

1. Married priests will remarry divorced Catholics and also provide interfaith services and nondenominational ceremonies. They will accommodate most venues including beach weddings.

2. The sacrament of marriage will be valid according to the Roman Catholic Church’s Canon Laws (843), but it will not be “officially” recognized by the Catholic Church. It will also be civilly legal. Married priests are legally certified to perform this ministry.

3. The service can be as religious as you wish, including a Mass for those who want one. Everyone will be invited to Communion.

4. Married priests are no longer on the church’s payroll. Like all other wedding officiants, most have specific fees that include meetings, rehearsals, travel, etc. Hardship cases, of course, are most likely not refused.

CITI Ministries is a 501.c3 non-profit organization that locates and recruits married priests. Your tax-deductible donation, no matter how small, will help us help others. Thank you.
